The first step is to choose the residency basis for the principal applicant. This may be either spouse, obtaining status through their own company, an employer, investment, property ownership, the Golden Visa or another qualifying route.
The chosen route affects the validity of family visas, the filing sequence, the cost of the process and future renewal requirements. If residency is linked to a company, annual business licence renewal becomes part of the overall plan. If a long-term residency programme is being considered, the principal applicant’s eligibility must be confirmed first.

Who Can Be Sponsored as a Family Member?
A UAE resident who meets the applicable requirements may sponsor a spouse and children.
- Husband or wife — with a duly attested marriage certificate.
- Sons — up to the applicable age limit, typically around 25. After that, they usually need their own residency basis, such as education, employment or another eligible route.
- Unmarried daughters — generally without an age limit.
- Children with disabilities — regardless of age.
In certain cases, parents and other dependants may also be sponsored, but the income, accommodation and insurance requirements are significantly higher.
Eligibility is determined not only by the family relationship. The sponsor’s status and remaining visa validity, financial position, suitable accommodation, the children’s ages and the requirements of the relevant emirate all need to be considered.
Sponsor Requirements
There are three main areas to check before submission: income, accommodation and medical insurance.
Income
For sponsoring a spouse and children, the indicative minimum salary threshold is around AED 4,000 per month, or AED 3,000 where accommodation is provided by the employer.
Sponsoring parents generally requires a significantly higher income level, typically around AED 20,000 per month, and parent visas are usually issued for one year with annual renewal.
If the principal applicant owns their own company, income is supported by the company documents and the way remuneration is paid to the owner. This should be planned before the company is established, not afterwards.
Accommodation
A registered tenancy contract is required. In Dubai, this means a tenancy registered through Ejari. The type and size of the property are also taken into account; for example, a studio is generally not considered suitable accommodation for a family with children.
Medical Insurance
Medical insurance is required for each family member and should be in place before the visa is issued. Basic plans start from around AED 600 per person per year. This is often underestimated in the initial budget because the cost needs to be multiplied by the number of family members.

How to Choose the Principal Applicant
The principal applicant does not necessarily have to be the spouse with the higher income. The better choice is usually the person with the most stable residency basis and the route that will be easiest to maintain over time.
For entrepreneurial families, this is often UAE residency through their own company. The business is established first, followed by the owner’s Emirates ID, and only then does family sponsorship begin.

This route may be available to qualifying property owners, investors, entrepreneurs and skilled professionals. A single formal criterion is not enough: the value and ownership structure of the asset, professional qualifications or other eligibility grounds must be documented.

Family Relocation Through a Company
If one spouse plans to run a business, company formation may provide the basis for their UAE residency and subsequent family sponsorship.
The jurisdiction should not be selected solely on the basis of licence cost. Visa allocation can depend on the office solution: in many Free Zones, a flexi-desk package may no longer be sufficient once the number of visas increases and a physical office may be required. For a family of four plus employees, this threshold can be reached sooner than expected.

UAE Residency for Parents
Sponsoring parents is possible in some circumstances, but the requirements are more detailed than for a spouse or children.
The sponsor’s income threshold is significantly higher, typically around AED 20,000 per month. Suitable accommodation, medical insurance for the parents, proof of relationship and evidence that the sponsor is their main financial supporter may also be required. Parent visas are usually issued for one year and renewed annually, and in some cases a bank deposit may be required.

Once Emirates IDs have been issued, the family usually needs to open personal bank accounts and organise the transfer of funds to the UAE.

Housing, Insurance and Everyday Infrastructure
Housing should be planned alongside the visa process rather than afterwards: a registered tenancy contract may be required for family sponsorship, so the sequence matters.
In Dubai, the tenancy is registered through Ejari, and the resulting Ejari certificate may be required as part of the supporting documents. Medical insurance is also required for each family member, with policy requirements depending on the emirate, the applicant’s age and health profile.
If the family is relocating with children, the visa timeline also needs to be aligned with the school calendar. Schools may require the child’s residency documents for enrolment, while places at popular schools are often allocated well in advance. Renewing Family Visas
The validity of a dependant’s residence visa is linked to the principal applicant’s status and cannot extend beyond it. If the sponsor has one year remaining, the dependant’s visa will be limited accordingly.
This creates a strict renewal sequence: first the sponsor’s underlying basis and visa are renewed, followed by the residence documents of the dependants. If the principal applicant obtained residency through a company, timely business licence renewal becomes part of the same chain.
An expired business licence may suspend the company’s immigration file. While it is suspended, the sponsor may be unable to renew their own visa or issue or renew a dependant visa. It is therefore sensible to track the business licence, sponsor visa and family visas in one renewal calendar.
For employment-based residency, the employment relationship must remain valid. For Golden Visa, investment or property-based routes, the relevant eligibility criteria may need to be confirmed again at renewal.
