How to Open a Bank Account in the UAE After Moving

Getting an Emirates ID is an important milestone, but it is not an automatic bank approval. The bank assesses the applicant independently and may review documents, source of funds and expected transactions.

It is therefore useful to prepare for the banking stage before you move.

Bank requirements vary by product and customer profile and may change. The examples below reflect published bank requirements as of August 2026.

When should you apply after moving?

If you need a standard resident current or savings account, the logical point is after your Emirates ID and residence visa are issued.

While the documents are being processed, prepare a banking file:

  • bank statements;
  • proof of income;
  • proof of address;
  • source-of-funds documents;
  • tax information;
  • company documents and business description if you are an entrepreneur.

Which UAE banks can you consider?

The UAE has many local and international banks. New residents looking for personal banking often consider, for example:

  • Emirates NBD;
  • ADCB;
  • FAB;
  • Emirates Islamic;
  • Mashreq;
  • other banks depending on the applicant profile and product.

This list does not mean that any bank is guaranteed to approve a particular applicant. The right option depends on residency status, type of income, expected balances and transactions, nationality and other factors.

What do banks ask residents for? Examples

Emirates NBD

For a current account, the bank lists documents including:

  • valid passport;
  • UAE residence visa;
  • Emirates ID;
  • salary certificate or, for self-employed applicants, a trade licence or bank statements;
  • proof of address such as a tenancy contract or utility bill.

ADCB

For a current account, the bank lists:

  • passport with a valid UAE residence visa;
  • Emirates ID;
  • salary certificate.

Even for a relatively standard salaried profile, the required package is therefore broader than an Emirates ID alone.

Can a non-resident open a bank account in the UAE?

Yes, some banks offer products for non-residents.

For example, Emirates NBD publishes requirements for non-resident customers that can include:

  • passport;
  • proof of address;
  • recent bank statements;
  • or a bank reference from the country of residence.

Emirates Islamic also publishes a separate document set for individual non-residents, including passport, evidence of employment or self-employment and proof of address.

However, a non-resident account and a standard resident current account are not the same thing. Available functions, minimum balance requirements and the approval process can differ.

Does an Emirates ID guarantee a bank account?

No.

An Emirates ID confirms your identity and residency status, but the final decision remains with the bank.

The bank may assess:

  • source of income;
  • origin of savings;
  • tax residency;
  • countries connected to your transactions;
  • employer or business profile;
  • expected volume and nature of payments.

What should an entrepreneur prepare?

An entrepreneur benefits from having not only documents but also a clear, consistent story:

  • what the business does;
  • who its main clients are;
  • where counterparties are located;
  • which countries payments will come from;
  • what outgoing payments will be for;
  • expected turnover;
  • how the capital was accumulated.

Contracts, invoices, the company website, financial statements and bank statements can help support this profile.

What are source of funds and source of wealth?

A bank may be interested not only in current salary but also in where your money comes from.

Source of funds means the origin of money used for a particular transaction or deposited into the account.

Source of wealth means how the client's overall wealth was accumulated, for example through business ownership, salary, sale of an asset or investments.

If you plan to make a large transfer after moving, prepare supporting documents in advance.

Why does a bank ask for additional documents?

An additional request does not automatically mean a refusal. The bank may need to:

  • understand a large incoming payment;
  • match a payment to a contract;
  • update business information;
  • verify address;
  • clarify tax status;
  • refresh KYC information.

Banks also update KYC after an account is opened, so keep your banking file after receiving the account and card.

How long does it take to open a bank account?

There is no universal timeframe. A straightforward salary account and an entrepreneur with international income may go through very different levels of review.

Timing depends on:

  • the bank and product;
  • residency status;
  • completeness of documents;
  • source of income;
  • whether additional checks are required;
  • how quickly the client responds to requests.

Promises such as “a bank account guaranteed in 3–7 days” should therefore be treated cautiously unless the client profile has been reviewed first.

Personal and corporate accounts are different tasks

If you register a company, the owner's personal bank account does not replace a corporate account.

For a company, the bank may also analyse:

  • licence;
  • business activity;
  • ownership structure;
  • counterparties;
  • contracts;
  • expected turnover;
  • payment geography.

Checklist before applying

  • residence visa and Emirates ID are ready;
  • proof of address is available;
  • bank statements are prepared;
  • income can be documented;
  • source of savings can be explained and evidenced;
  • tax residency can be stated correctly;
  • entrepreneurs have contracts and a business description;
  • you can explain the expected transactions on the account.
