Digital Nomad in the UAE: Relocation Route for Remote Workers

I work remotely for a company outside the UAE and want to live in the Emirates.

If you work remotely for a company outside the UAE, you do not necessarily need to set up a UAE company in order to relocate. The UAE offers a dedicated residence route for remote employees — Virtual Work Residence.

It is often searched for as the UAE Digital Nomad Visa, Dubai Remote Work Visa or Virtual Work Visa. But the starting point should not be the name of the visa. What matters is how your work is structured: who employs you, how the relationship is documented, how long you have been receiving your current income and whether that income can be clearly evidenced.

MANAR CAPITAL connects these steps into one relocation route: eligibility assessment, Virtual Work Residence, Emirates ID, personal banking, housing and, where relevant, family residence.

The full route

  1. Confirm that Virtual Work Residence fits your employment model.
  2. Prepare evidence of remote employment and stable income.
  3. Apply for the relevant virtual work visa and residence process.
  4. Complete the medical fitness process and obtain Emirates ID.
  5. Apply for a personal UAE bank account.
  6. Arrange long-term housing and, if required, family residence.

Virtual Work Residence is issued for one year and can be renewed if the eligibility conditions continue to be met.

In 2026, applicants should also be prepared to show a longer income history. Dubai's official guidance for the Virtual Work Visa currently lists bank statements for the previous six months among the application documents.

Who this route is for

The typical applicant is employed by a company outside the UAE, performs that job remotely and wants to continue the same employment while living in Dubai or another emirate.

GDRFA Dubai currently requires proof that the applicant works remotely for an organisation outside the UAE and earns at least USD 3,500 per month, or the equivalent in another currency.

Dubai's official Virtual Work Visa guidance also states that the applicant should be employed by a non-UAE company under a contract with at least one year of validity.

Remote employee and freelancer are not the same case

If you work with several clients, sign your own service contracts and invoice for your work, you are not following the standard remote-employee scenario. In that case, a freelance permit or a UAE company may be more appropriate than Virtual Work Residence.

Start with the way you actually work

All of the situations below may look like “working online”, but they lead to different residence and banking solutions.

One overseas employer and a regular salary

You have an employment contract or equivalent employer documentation, your salary is paid regularly, and the employer is based outside the UAE. This is the core scenario for Virtual Work Residence.

Several clients and your own service contracts

You source your own clients, sign service agreements and issue invoices. This is closer to self-employment and should normally be assessed under the freelancer route rather than treated automatically as a digital nomad visa case.

You own a company outside the UAE

Do not assume that the employee requirements apply in exactly the same way. The evidence of work, company ownership and income needs to be checked separately, and the appropriate residence route should be confirmed before filing.

Step 1. Check whether you meet the requirements

The current GDRFA Dubai requirements for Virtual Work Residence include:

  • a valid passport;
  • proof of remote work for an organisation outside the UAE;
  • proof of monthly income of at least USD 3,500 or the equivalent;
  • valid health insurance;
  • a medical fitness test as part of the residence process;
  • the documents required for Emirates ID.

The exact document list may vary depending on the applicant's details and the filing channel, so it should be checked again immediately before submission.

Prepare six months of bank statements

Dubai's official Virtual Work Visa guidance currently lists bank statements from the previous six months among the required application documents.

In practice, this means that someone who has only recently changed jobs, changed salary accounts or started receiving the qualifying income may need additional evidence. It is better to identify that issue before the application is filed.

Step 2. Build a consistent income and employment file

The documents should tell one coherent story: you are genuinely employed outside the UAE, you can perform that job remotely and you receive the income stated in the application on a regular basis.

A practical file will normally be built around:

  • an employment contract or employer letter confirming your current employment;
  • confirmation that the role can be performed remotely;
  • proof of salary or other qualifying employment income;
  • bank statements for the previous six months;
  • your most recent payslip;
  • passport;
  • health insurance valid in the UAE;
  • personal documents required for the residence process.
A recent job change needs to be checked separately

The public GDRFA service page does not state a blanket rule that you must have worked for the same employer for six months. However, Dubai's application guidance asks for six months of bank statements and evidence of current employment. If your present job started recently, we recommend checking whether your available documents are sufficient before filing.

Step 3. Apply for Virtual Work Residence

The official residence category is Virtual Work Residence. It is designed for a person who works remotely for an organisation outside the UAE and does not require a UAE-based guarantor or host.

The residence permit is valid for one year and can be renewed if the qualifying conditions continue to be met.

The application can be made through the relevant digital immigration channels. The exact sequence depends on the emirate and on whether the applicant is applying from outside the UAE or while already in the country.

“Digital Nomad Visa” is a search term, not the formal residence name

Official UAE and Dubai sources use terms such as Virtual Work Residence and Virtual Work Visa. When checking requirements, it is safer to work from the official service name rather than relying only on general “digital nomad visa” information online.

Step 4. Medical fitness and Emirates ID

The residence process includes the required medical fitness procedures and the issuance of Emirates ID.

Emirates ID is central to day-to-day life in the UAE. It is used for banking, mobile services, long-term rentals, healthcare and many government and private services.

How UAE residence and Emirates ID are arranged

Step 5. Open a personal bank account

Once your residence status and Emirates ID are in place, you can apply for a personal UAE bank account.

Residence does not remove bank compliance. The bank may still review your employer, source of income, countries from which funds are received, salary level and expected account activity.

Residence does not guarantee bank approval

Emirates ID makes access to resident banking possible, but the final decision remains with the bank. A clear employment contract, understandable source of income and consistent payment history make the financial profile easier to assess.

What changes if you start working for yourself

Virtual Work Residence is designed around living in the UAE while continuing remote employment for an organisation outside the country. It does not automatically give you a structure for running your own UAE business.

If, after relocating, you begin to:

  • provide services independently to several clients;
  • receive payments for your own business activity;
  • work with UAE-based clients;
  • hire employees;
  • build a separate business;

the structure should be reviewed. A freelance permit or a UAE company may then be more appropriate.

If you are relocating with your family

Dubai's official guidance states that Virtual Work Visa holders can sponsor qualifying family members, including a spouse and children. Family residence is handled through a separate process and additional requirements apply.

If children are relocating with you, residence planning quickly becomes connected with school choice, residential area and daily travel. It is often better to resolve these questions before signing a long-term tenancy.

Housing: use temporary accommodation first if the timing is unclear

Temporary accommodation can be useful during the first weeks while the residence process, Emirates ID and banking are being completed.

For a family, the long-term location should also reflect school choice and daily logistics rather than rent alone.

A UAE residence visa is not the same as tax residence

Obtaining Virtual Work Residence and Emirates ID gives you a UAE residence status, but it does not by itself determine your tax residence in every country or the tax treatment of your employment income.

If you continue working for a foreign employer, spend significant periods outside the UAE or retain substantial ties to another jurisdiction, your tax position should be reviewed separately under the rules of the countries involved.

Do not plan the relocation around the visa alone

The visa answers one question: on what basis can you reside in the UAE? Banking, tax residence, family residence, housing and the way you actually work after the move are separate parts of the relocation plan.

When this route may not be the right fit

  • you do not have an overseas employer and work only with your own clients;
  • you have only recently started the current job and cannot yet evidence a stable income history;
  • your monthly income is below the applicable threshold;
  • you intend to operate a business in the UAE;
  • you need a corporate account for your own activity;
  • you plan to hire employees.

In these cases, we compare other residence routes, including a freelance permit, company setup or another suitable UAE residence option.

What to prepare for the first discussion

You do not need to assemble the complete application file before speaking to us. For an initial assessment, we need to understand:

  • where your employer is incorporated;
  • how your employment relationship is documented;
  • how long you have worked for the current employer;
  • how and where your salary is paid;
  • your average monthly income over the previous six months;
  • whether you are moving alone or with family;
  • whether you need a UAE bank account;
  • whether you intend to remain solely employed or develop your own activity after relocating.

From there, we can determine whether Virtual Work Residence is the appropriate route or whether another structure should be considered from the outset.

Where applicants usually run into problems

The first mistake is treating any online income as sufficient for a digital nomad visa. The second is checking only the salary threshold and ignoring the required income history. The third is obtaining residence as a remote employee and then using a personal account for a new independent business activity.

We therefore look at the whole chain: employer, employment documents, six-month income history, residence, banking, family and your plans after the move.

What MANAR CAPITAL does — and what remains with you

Your part: explain how your employment is structured, provide employer and income documents, prepare your personal documents and complete the mandatory medical and identity procedures.

Our part: assess whether the route fits your situation, check the current filing requirements, structure the application process, support the residence and Emirates ID procedures and connect the move with banking and family relocation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UAE Digital Nomad Visa?

“Digital Nomad Visa” is a common name used for the UAE's virtual work residence route. In Dubai, the official terminology includes Virtual Work Residence and Virtual Work Visa. It is designed for people who work remotely for organisations outside the UAE.

What income is required for Virtual Work Residence?

GDRFA Dubai currently requires proof of monthly income of at least USD 3,500, or the equivalent in another currency.

How many months of bank statements are required?

Dubai's official Virtual Work Visa guidance currently lists bank statements covering the previous six months among the application documents.

Can I apply if I changed jobs two months ago?

This should be checked individually. The public GDRFA service page does not state a universal six-month service requirement with one employer, but Dubai's application guidance requires evidence of current employment and six months of bank statements.

How long is Virtual Work Residence valid?

It is issued for one year and can be renewed if the applicant continues to meet the relevant conditions.

Can I bring my family?

Dubai's official guidance states that eligible Virtual Work Visa holders can sponsor qualifying family members. Family residence applications are processed separately and additional requirements apply.

Do I need to register a company in the UAE?

Not if you qualify for Virtual Work Residence and continue working remotely for an organisation outside the UAE. If you run your own activity or work with several clients, a different structure may be required.

Can I open a UAE bank account?

Once your UAE residence and Emirates ID are in place, you can apply for a personal resident bank account. The bank will make its own compliance decision based on your documents and financial profile.

Is the Digital Nomad Visa the same as a freelance visa?

No. Virtual Work Residence is built around remote employment for an organisation outside the UAE. A freelancer independently provides services to clients and normally needs a different legal structure for that activity.
