UAE Residence Visa and Emirates ID

We help clients identify the most suitable basis for UAE residency, prepare the required documents, complete the necessary procedures and obtain an Emirates ID.

The core process is broadly the same across most categories: entry permit, medical fitness test, biometrics, residence visa issuance and Emirates ID. From entry permit to receiving the physical card, the process typically takes 2–4 weeks. What differs is the underlying eligibility, the document list and the cost — not the overall sequence.

Residency may be based on your own company, employment, property ownership, investment, professional activity, remote work, education or family sponsorship. Each route has its own eligibility criteria, timelines and renewal conditions.

MANAR CAPITAL treats the residence visa as one part of a wider relocation strategy. Before the process begins, we clarify whether the client plans to run a business, open a bank account, relocate family members, purchase property or spend a significant part of the year in the UAE. The last point is particularly important: a standard residence visa may be affected if the holder remains outside the country for more than 180 consecutive days.

What Is a UAE Residence Visa?

A UAE residence visa confirms a foreign national’s right to live legally in the country for a specified period. It may be linked to an employer, your own company, a family sponsor, property ownership, investment or one of the independent residency programmes.

The validity period depends on the category. Standard routes may provide residency for one, two or three years, while long-term programmes may provide status for five or ten years. Renewal is possible as long as the underlying basis remains valid, for example while the company is active, the employment contract remains in force or the qualifying property is still owned.

Since 2022, a physical visa sticker is no longer placed in the passport. Residency is confirmed through the electronic residence visa and Emirates ID, while the e-visa can be downloaded through the relevant ICP or GDRFA portal.

Applications in Dubai are processed through GDRFA, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. In the other emirates, applications are handled through ICP, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.

What Is Emirates ID?

Emirates ID is the official identity card issued to UAE residents. The application is submitted as part of the overall residency process; it is not obtained through a completely separate procedure.

The card validity generally matches the residence visa. The issuance fee is AED 100–370 depending on the validity period, while typing-centre charges are paid separately.

Emirates ID is used when dealing with government authorities, banks, insurers, healthcare providers, telecom operators and landlords. It is one of the main documents used for everyday life in the UAE, including banking, mobile services and tenancy arrangements.

However, holding an Emirates ID does not guarantee bank account approval and does not automatically make the holder a UAE tax resident. Both matters are assessed separately.

What Can UAE Residency Be Based On?

There is no single residency route that suits everyone. An entrepreneur may obtain status through their own company, an employee through an employer, and family members through sponsorship by the principal applicant. Separate long-term programmes are available for investors, property owners and qualifying professionals.

For clients who plan to use the UAE as a base for business, residency through your own company may be appropriate. The process begins with choosing a jurisdiction, obtaining the business licence and establishing the corporate structure, after which the residence visa process can begin.

If the main objective is long-term residence, investment, property ownership or professional status, it may be worth assessing eligibility for the UAE Golden Visa. One important practical difference is that long-term visa holders are not subject to the standard 180-day absence rule in the same way.

Remote work programmes may be considered for applicants employed by overseas companies. Separate routes also exist for freelancers, skilled professionals, students, retirees and family members of existing UAE residents.

During the consultation, we compare the available options by eligibility criteria, timing, initial cost and renewal obligations. If a company is not genuinely needed for the client’s business activity, we also assess whether another basis would be more efficient, because maintaining a company creates ongoing corporate, accounting and tax obligations.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 0. Establishment Card — Only for Residency Through a Company

The Establishment Card opens the company’s immigration file. Until it is issued, the company cannot submit visa applications, including the owner’s own application.

Issuance typically takes 3–7 working days and costs around AED 2,000–2,500. The card is valid for one year and is renewed together with the business licence. Registration in the e-Channel system is handled separately and may involve a deposit and a one-off fee; it is required for submitting visa applications.

This step does not apply to routes based on employment, property ownership or family sponsorship, where the sponsor’s immigration file is already in place.

Step 1. Entry Permit

The sponsor submits the application through GDRFA or ICP. Issuance typically takes 1–3 working days. The permit is valid for 60 days from the date of issue, giving the applicant time to enter the UAE and complete the required procedures.

Step 2. Entry into the UAE or In-Country Status Change

If you are outside the UAE, you enter the country using the entry permit and the immigration status is activated on arrival. If you are already in the UAE on a visit or tourist status, an in-country status change may be completed without leaving the country, typically within 1–3 working days.

Step 3. Medical Fitness Test

The medical fitness test includes a blood test and chest X-ray at an approved medical centre. It is mandatory for applicants aged 18 and over. Results are transferred electronically to the immigration system and are typically available within 1–2 working days.

In Dubai, Smart Salem offers VIP packages that can combine the medical fitness process and biometrics into one visit, without separate appointments. This can save significant time if you are travelling to the UAE specifically to complete the residency procedures.

Step 4. Biometrics and Emirates ID Application

The Emirates ID application is submitted and biometric data is collected. If appointment slots are available, both steps may be completed on the same day. As a practical estimate, allow 1–3 working days.

Step 5. Residence Visa and Emirates ID Issuance

Once the complete file has been reviewed — including the entry permit, medical fitness result, Emirates ID application and supporting documents — the residence permit is issued. The physical Emirates ID card is printed and delivered separately.

How Long the Full Process Takes

From entry permit to receiving the Emirates ID card, allow around 2–4 weeks. The first part of the process — entry permit, arrival, medical fitness test, biometrics and residence visa issuance — typically takes 8–14 working days. Card issuance, printing and delivery may take another 5–10 working days. For residency through your own company, add 3–7 working days for the Establishment Card.

Cost of UAE Residency

A residence visa with Emirates ID typically costs around AED 3,800–5,000 per person. This amount includes:

  • entry permit;
  • standard medical fitness test;
  • biometrics;
  • Emirates ID issuance fee of AED 100–370 depending on the card validity period;
  • residence permit issuance.

Additional costs may include:

  • Establishment Card — AED 2,000–2,500. One per company, renewed annually. Applies only to residency through your own company;
  • e-Channel registration — deposit and one-off registration fee;
  • medical insurance — required for the residence visa. Basic plans start from around AED 600 per year, while broader cover may start from AED 5,000;
  • typing-centre services and expedited medical packages, where required;
  • translation and legalisation of foreign-issued documents.

When planning the budget, remember that renewal repeats much of the process: a new medical fitness test, a new Emirates ID application and new government fees. Residency is therefore not a one-off cost.

Do You Need to Be in the UAE?

The preparatory stage can be handled remotely: assessment of the residency basis, programme selection, document preparation, translations and legalisation, and submission of the entry permit application.

Personal presence in the UAE is required for three stages: the medical fitness test, biometrics and Emirates ID procedures. A realistic minimum stay is around 5–7 days when using expedited services such as Smart Salem, or 10–14 days with standard appointments.

If you also plan to open an account with a traditional bank, allow an additional 3–5 days for an in-person KYC meeting. Digital banks operate remotely, but generally only after UAE residency has been obtained.

MANAR CAPITAL identifies in advance which stages can be completed remotely and how much time it is sensible to spend in the UAE. This is particularly important for clients who continue to run businesses or work outside the country.

Document Preparation

The required document set depends on the residency basis: the requirements for a company owner, employee, investor and family member are different. Some core documents, however, are common across most applications.

The basic set typically includes a passport valid for at least six months, a compliant photograph and proof of your current immigration status if you are already in the UAE.

Before submission, we check that names are spelled consistently across all documents and that dates and personal details match. Differences in transliteration between a passport and a marriage certificate are among the most common causes of delay.

Where residency is linked to a company, we review the business licence, corporate documents and immigration documents. For family sponsorship, we separately review marriage certificates, birth certificates and other evidence of family relationship.

Documents issued outside the UAE may require translation and authentication: apostille or consular legalisation, followed by attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The exact procedure depends on the country of issue. Allow 2–4 weeks for this before the visa process begins.

The 180-Day Rule: How Long Can You Stay Outside the UAE?

A standard UAE residence visa may be cancelled or cease to remain valid if the holder stays outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days.

The key word is “consecutive”. The rule concerns continuous time spent outside the country, not the total number of days spent abroad during the year. A return to the UAE resets the count.

Who is exempt. Holders of certain long-term residence visas are exempt from this restriction and may retain their status for the full five- or ten-year validity period regardless of how much time they spend outside the UAE. This is one of the main practical reasons to consider a long-term route if you do not plan to live in the UAE full-time.

What happens if the rule is breached. The visa may be cancelled and the process may need to be started again: a new entry permit, medical fitness test, biometrics and government fees. A new Emirates ID is then issued.

Are there exceptions? In some cases, an application for permission to return after a prolonged absence can be submitted through ICP or GDRFA. Grounds are assessed individually and may include medical treatment, education or an extended business assignment. The application should be made before the relevant deadline rather than afterwards.

How This Affects the Choice of Residency Route

If you expect to spend less than half the year in the UAE, the 180-day rule should be considered before choosing the route. A standard residence visa may require periodic return to the UAE, while missing the permitted period can mean repeating the residency process and paying the associated fees again.

Emirates ID and Opening a Bank Account

UAE residency broadens the range of banking products available. Without a residence visa and Emirates ID, foreign nationals are generally offered a more limited range of products, often focused on savings rather than full current-account functionality.

Emirates ID is only one part of the banking profile. The bank also assesses the applicant’s professional activity, source of income, source of funds, expected transaction countries and economic connection to the UAE. Additional documents may include bank statements, a CV, employment contract or corporate documents.

Banking requirements should ideally be considered when selecting the residency route. For entrepreneurs, the company’s activity, the owner’s personal profile, expected international transfers and the nature of incoming funds should form one consistent picture.

MANAR CAPITAL helps clients prepare for bank onboarding, but the final decision is always made by the bank. No adviser can guarantee a compliance approval.

UAE Residence Visa and Tax Residency

A UAE residence visa and UAE tax residency are two separate statuses with different legal bases. Obtaining a residence visa and Emirates ID does not automatically make an individual a UAE tax resident.

Tax residency is confirmed by a certificate issued by the Federal Tax Authority. There are two main routes:

  • 183 days or more of physical presence in the UAE during a 12-month period;
  • 90 days or more where the individual also holds UAE residency, UAE or GCC nationality and has a permanent home, employment or business in the country.

An Immigration Report showing entries and exits is required for the application.

It is important to distinguish between different types of Tax Residency Certificate. One may be issued for the purposes of a specific double tax treaty and used to claim treaty benefits in another jurisdiction. Another may be used for domestic or administrative purposes, including certain banking and KYC processes.

What a UAE Residence Visa Does Not Remove

Tax obligations in any country where you remain tax resident continue until your tax status actually changes. This may include reporting foreign bank accounts and controlled foreign companies. If you retain business interests, property or income in several countries, your tax position should be reviewed before applying for residency, not afterwards.

Residency for Family Members

Once the principal applicant has obtained UAE residency, they may sponsor a spouse and children where the applicable requirements are met.

The sequence is straightforward: the sponsor’s residency is completed first, and only then does family sponsorship begin. Family applications cannot normally be submitted in parallel because the immigration system requires the sponsor to hold active status.

The main delays often come from the documents rather than the immigration procedure itself. Marriage and birth certificates issued outside the UAE may require translation and legalisation, and if the documents were issued in different countries, each may follow a different authentication process. Preparing the family document package can therefore take longer than company formation.

For that reason, we review the family documents at the beginning of the project, in parallel with the principal applicant’s residency process rather than afterwards.

Renewing the Residence Visa and Emirates ID

The residence permit and Emirates ID should be renewed before they expire. A 30-day grace period applies after expiry, during which the status may be renewed without penalties, after which daily overstay fines may apply.

Renewal repeats much of the original process: a new medical fitness test, a new Emirates ID application and new government fees. The passport should have at least six months of remaining validity.

The underlying basis for residency is also reviewed at renewal. If the visa is linked to a company, the business licence and corporate documents must remain valid.

An Expired Business Licence Can Block Visa Procedures

If the business licence is not renewed on time, the company’s immigration file may be suspended. While suspended, the owner may be unable to renew their own visa, sponsor a family member or process an employee visa. It is therefore sensible to manage licence and visa renewal dates in one calendar.

If the existing basis no longer fits your plans, another residency route can be considered before the current status expires.

How MANAR CAPITAL Helps

We begin by assessing the client’s objectives and identifying the available residency options. We explain the differences between the routes, build the sequence of actions and estimate not only the initial cost but also the ongoing cost of maintaining the status.

As part of our support, we prepare applications and forms, review documents, coordinate translations and legalisation, manage visa procedures, arrange medical fitness appointments and biometrics, and monitor Emirates ID issuance.

If the client is relocating with family members, once the principal applicant’s status is complete we continue with family relocation to the UAE.

Where residency is linked to business activity, our support may also include company formation in the UAE, preparation for corporate bank onboarding and employee visa arrangements.

Some procedures are handled directly by the MANAR CAPITAL team, while others are coordinated with licensed specialist partners in the UAE.

What to Consider Before Starting

Requirements Differ by Emirate

Dubai uses GDRFA, while the other emirates use ICP. Procedures, document requirements and government fees may differ. The final route is confirmed after reviewing the applicant’s category and the rules in force at the time of submission.

A Residence Visa Does Not Guarantee Banking

Emirates ID improves access to local infrastructure, but the bank still makes its own decision after reviewing the client and the source of funds.

Initial Setup Is Only Part of the Cost

In addition to the AED 3,800–5,000 indicative cost of the residence visa process, the budget may include insurance from AED 600 per year, status renewal every one to three years with repeat medical testing, family sponsorship and corporate costs where the residency is linked to a company.

The Final Decision Is Made by the Government Authority

MANAR CAPITAL helps clients select the route, prepare the documents and manage the process, but does not guarantee application approval. The final decision is made by the relevant authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to obtain a UAE residence visa?

From entry permit to receiving the Emirates ID card, allow around 2–4 weeks. The first part of the process typically takes 8–14 working days, followed by another 5–10 working days for final issuance, printing and delivery. For residency through your own company, add 3–7 working days for the Establishment Card.

How much does a UAE residence visa with Emirates ID cost?

Around AED 3,800–5,000 per person, including the entry permit, medical fitness test, biometrics, Emirates ID fee of AED 100–370 depending on validity, and residence permit issuance. Medical insurance from around AED 600 per year is additional, as is the Establishment Card of around AED 2,000–2,500 for company-based residency.

How long can I stay outside the UAE without losing residency?

Under a standard residence visa, the limit is generally 180 consecutive days. The count relates to continuous absence rather than the total number of days spent abroad during the year. Certain long-term residence categories are exempt from this rule.

Can I obtain Emirates ID without a residence visa?

No. For foreign nationals, Emirates ID is issued as part of UAE residency and cannot be obtained independently.

Do I have to establish a company to obtain UAE residency?

No. A company is only one possible basis. Depending on the situation, residency may be based on employment, property ownership, investment, family sponsorship, remote work or a long-term residence programme. A company also creates ongoing renewal, accounting and compliance obligations.

Can I start the residency process remotely?

Yes. Document preparation, legalisation and entry permit submission can be handled remotely. You need to be in the UAE for the medical fitness test, biometrics and Emirates ID procedures. A realistic minimum stay is around 5–7 days when using expedited services.

What is Smart Salem and why is it useful?

Smart Salem is an approved medical fitness centre in Dubai. Under certain VIP packages, medical procedures and biometrics can be completed in one visit without separate appointments, which can save several days for applicants travelling specifically for the residency process.

Is medical insurance required for a UAE residence visa?

Yes. Medical insurance is required for the visa process. Basic plans start from around AED 600 per year, while broader cover may start from AED 5,000.

Does a UAE residence visa automatically make me a UAE tax resident?

No. Tax residency is confirmed separately, including through an FTA Tax Residency Certificate where the relevant conditions are met. A 183-day physical presence test applies in one route, while a separate 90-day route may apply where additional conditions are satisfied.

Can I sponsor my spouse and children?

Yes, once the principal applicant’s UAE residency is complete and the applicable family sponsorship requirements are met. Marriage and birth certificates issued outside the UAE may require translation and legalisation.

Does Emirates ID guarantee that a bank will open an account?

No. The bank separately reviews source of funds, professional background, expected transactions and the client’s connection to the UAE. Residency broadens the available options but does not replace bank compliance.

What happens if I miss the residence visa renewal deadline?

A 30-day grace period applies after expiry, after which daily penalties may be charged. If the visa is linked to a company, an expired business licence may also suspend the company’s immigration file and block further visa actions.
