Schools in Dubai: How to Choose When Relocating
Dubai has a large private-school market, with more than 230 schools listed in the current KHDA directory. They differ in curriculum, fees, age and grade structure, inspection rating, location and admission requirements.
That is why “What is the best school in Dubai?” is usually the wrong starting question. A family needs a school that fits the child’s educational pathway, budget and daily logistics.
Information and fee examples are current as of September 2026. KHDA froze private-school tuition fee increases for the 2026/27 academic year, but additional charges and seat availability should always be checked before applying.
Start with five decisions
- the child's age and current grade;
- curriculum;
- annual budget;
- likely residential area;
- the family's plans for the next three to five years.
If the child may return to the Russian education system, one pathway may make sense. If the family expects a future move to the UK, US or another international destination, another curriculum may be more portable.
Which school curricula are available in Dubai?
British curriculum
A common international route in Dubai, generally leading towards GCSE/IGCSE and then A-levels or other senior-school qualifications.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
A widely recognised international pathway often chosen by globally mobile families. Some schools offer the full IB continuum while others offer selected IB stages.
American curriculum
American schools use grade levels and can differ in accreditation, subject choices and graduation requirements.
Russian curriculum
KHDA lists Russian International School under the Russian Curriculum. It is an option for families who want continuity with the Russian education system and Russian-language instruction.

The range is wide. A citywide “average school fee” is therefore less useful than the actual cost for the child's grade and the full annual fee sheet.

How to use KHDA ratings
KHDA regulates Dubai's private education sector. Its school directory includes curricula, grades, location, inspection information and School Fees Fact Sheets.
A rating is useful, but it is not the only decision criterion. Schools with a similar rating can differ substantially in programme, fees, scale, additional support and location.
Why the School Fees Fact Sheet matters
Headline tuition is not always the full annual cost. Depending on the school, families may also pay for:
- application and assessment;
- registration or enrolment deposits;
- uniforms;
- books and stationery;
- laptops or devices;
- school transport;
- meals;
- trips;
- extracurricular activities;
- additional educational support.
For example, American School of Dubai lists an annual facility fee of AED 12,984 for K2–Grade 12 non-corporate seat holders, while certain new students also pay a one-time AED 22,000 capital fee.
Seat availability matters
A school may fit the curriculum and budget perfectly but have no place in the required grade. Build a shortlist rather than relying on one option.
- identify five to seven schools;
- check age/grade placement;
- confirm availability;
- ask about assessments;
- review the complete annual fee picture;
- reduce the shortlist to two or three realistic options.
School first or apartment first?
For many relocating families, school first, residential area second is the safer order.
After creating the shortlist, check real morning travel time, school-bus routes, access to parents' workplaces and local rental levels.

- transfer/leaving certificate if required;
- medical and vaccination records;
- special educational needs documentation where relevant.
KHDA requires evidence of previous schooling for admissions above Grade 1.
